Once on This Island
Wednesday night we were at school to watch Lucas perform in this years Senior Musical Ensemble production 'Once on This Island'. The kids have been hard at work for many months now and the last few weeks rehearsals have taken all their free time. So it felt good to finally have it all come together with four sold-out performances these past two days. We were so looking forward to the show!
This years show 'Once on This Island' was a Tony Award winning one-act musical, which originally ran on Broadway in the 90's. The story is about a peasant girl on a tropical island, who uses the power of love to bring together people of different social classes.
Lucas didn't have a specific role this year but he was part of the Storytellers, who sang and dance and brought the story forward.
At one stage in the play all the Storytellers came out to a ball, dressed up in fancy clothes and dancing around the stage. Lucas looked very handsome in his suit, but still Nathan and I couldn't help but giggle a bit to ourselves watching him; those long limbs of his, long legs and arms all over... so grown up at the same time as he looked a bit like Mr Bean, flapping about.
The cast did a great job, although I think I did enjoy last years play a bit more because it had more comical parts. I was also a bit disappointed the music was so loud, it drowned out the singing in many parts, and made it hard to hear the Storytellers.
Lucas seemed to have a good time again on stage, and above all I think he has enjoyed making new friends and being part of the group. Even though the extensive rehearsal schedule took a toll on him this year, I hope he'll continue with the drama productions as he seems to enjoy it so much.
